The
not for profit, or independent, sector is the part of our society which
is responsible for preserving culture, providing opportunities for everyone,
operating schools, religious and other public-benefit institutions,
and building community. This sector, by working with individuals and
organizations, keeps alive the hope and soul of our country.
Fundraising is the activity within this sector that provides the fuel
to keep these organizations alive, healthy and able to meet their missions.
Fundraising is not a mysterious function that can be done by only a
gifted few. It is just a name for something each of us does all the
time and that is building relationships. From our earliest years,
we learn how to do all the elements of fundraising, although we are
not aware of this. We learn how to get others to join us, whether it
is to go to a movie, play a sport or join a team. We learn how to convince
others of a certain position why the movie was good, what sport
is the most fun or which is the best team. And we ask others to follow
our lead this is what I am doing; why dont you do
the same. Although we see the end product as an activity or belief
and not a financial gift, we are still doing what fundraising is all
about building relationships.
My job as a consultant is to instill confidence in both board and staff,
to provide them with the tools they need to succeed in building these
relationships and to help plan and guide the process.
